Sensible Strategies for Legionella Control in  Healthcare, Hotels and Universities Seminar overview (PDF)

There has been a significant increase in Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks, especially high profile ones resulting in significant illness. Major outbreaks in 2005 included the community wide outbreak in Rapid City, South Dakota, and the unique healthcare outbreaks at Seven Oaks Long Term Care Facility in Toronto and Sound Shore Medical Center in Westchester where most of the sick were not hospital patients. As a result of some outbreaks in 2005 the New York State DOH issued new guidelines for control of Legionella in healthcare facilities.  The Rapid City outbreak was a community wide outbreak that resulted in one death and 19 hospitalized and was sourced to a small ornamental fountain in a restaurant. Our faculty presenter, Tim Keane, was contracted by the State of South Dakota to investigate this outbreak, identify the source and develop guidelines for ornamental fountains. Seven Oaks, a long term healthcare facility with 250 residents in Toronto had an outbreak which resulted in 23 dead and over 130 ill. Almost half of those who got sick at Seven Oaks were staff, visitors or residents from a nearby neighborhood. The Sound Shore Medical Center outbreak resulted in 21 hospitalized; almost all of the infected were neighborhood residents that had never visited the hospital. Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks affect all type of buildings including hospitals, nursing homes, hotels, office buildings, apartment houses and universities. Recently there have been a significant amount of high profile outbreaks resulting in media attention, new guidelines and regulations. Approximately 1,700 cases of Legionnaires’ disease are reported to the CDC annually. CDC estimates that due to underreporting only about 10% of the actual cases are reported and that approximately 5% of the 500,000 annual pneumonia cases are from Legionnaires ’ disease.  This seminar will discuss many of the frequently asked questions including; Common root causes of outbreaks based on real outbreak investigations Myths and misperceptions related to Legionella and Legionella control Means and Methods to reduce the risk of Legionella in building water systems Why some types of buildings are at significantly higher risk than others  What are the real risks and liabilities associational with Legionella and  What are sensible strategies to minimize those risks  The course is for facility managers, engineers, operators, designers, general contractors, mechanical contractors, plumbing contractors, project managers, new construction managers, safety officers, infection control coordinators, industrial hygienists, and plumbing inspectors.
